HomeSharing Appears in National Newspapers
The recent increase of foreclosures and problems within the banking industry have resulted in a new housing 'crisis'. More homeowners nationwide are now considering a choice: whether to take in a boarder to keep their homes or move out of the home they've lived in for years.
A recent New York Times front page news story describes the delimma several homeowners faced when their personal financial situations deteriorated. With their homes at risk, more homeowners considered taking in boarders for additional income.
For the July 16th article, the NY Times contacted several homesharing agencies including ours. A NY Times reported spoke to Renee Drell, executive director of HomeSharing, Inc. (Bridgewater, NJ) to learn about homesharing in Somerset and Hunterdon counties. Portions of the article have been copied to a pdf file and can be found on our GALLERY page.

HomeSharing, Inc. appears near the end of the second page.
HomeSharing was also mentioned in the July 19, 2008, Daytona Beach NewsJournal. In a letter to the Editor a woman, who had recently moved from central New Jersey to Florida, wrote about her success with HomeSharing. For close to three years, she used homesharing as a method of keeping her home, calling it a "wonderful program". She felt that such a program might be helpful in Florida, which is seeing an unusually high number of foreclosures. She also mentions homesharing as a helpful solution for those who need an affordable place to live. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Interested in becoming a HomeSharing Provider or a Seeker?
HomeSharing was created in response to a great need for affordable housing in the community. Despite Somerset and Hunterdon County’s reputation for affluence, we are faced with a serious hidden homeless crisis. Long-time residents on fixed incomes are unable to maintain their mortgages. Corporate downsizing has placed formerly secure homeowners in jeopardy of losing their homes. Many simply can’t afford the high rental costs. HomeSharing clients also include: the working poor, senior citizens, disabled, and residents in transition (for example, widowed or divorced men and women unexpectedly forced to live on one income).
"Providers" are people who need to share their homes or apartments in order to maintain them. "Seekers" are individuals searching for affordable housing in the community.
You may want to be a HomeSharing Provider if you are: * a homeowner or apartment renter with an extra, bedroom * a retired or recently widowed person needing extra income * an elderly person in need of some assistance** * a person with a disability in needing some help with daily living** * parents with children in need of occasional childcare.
You may want to be a HomeSharing Seeker if you are: * a student (over the age of 18), or * an adult in the midst of a career change * a single parent * a recently widowed or divorced person * a working or retired person unable to afford rent on your own * a person with a disability**
**NOTE- clients must be independent enough to meet their own basic needs.
Eligibilty is not restricted on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or income.
