                            HomeSharing's Mission

To prevent homelessness by matching "providers," residents who need to share their homes or apartments in order to maintain them, with "seekers," individuals searching for affordable housing in the community.  These matches foster independence with dignity.

HomeSharing is also committed to assisting its clients in locating and utilizing other resources such as the Food Bank, low-cost medical care, and other support services.  The organization's services are provided free of charge to our clients.

HomeSharing is unique.  It is the only agency in New Jersey that prevents homelessness full-time through the home sharing model.

                   HomeSharing Has a New Logo

HomeSharing is changing its appearance with the adoption of a new logo starting in Spring, 2008.  The new logo is intended to rebrand HomeSharing and to elicit a spirit of unity and cooperation, with people coming together for a common cause - affordable, shared housing.

Last Fall, Professor Phyllis Lerner's Advanced Design class (at Raritan Valley Community College) took on the project of developing a number of possible logos for HomeSharing.  Utilizing the design concepts taught in Professor Lerner's class, students endeavored to create a logo reflective of HomeSharing's ideals.  All designs and concepts were reviewed by HomeSharing's Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees ultimately selected the logo developed by Katarzyna "Kasia" Siudzinska.  Kasia was recognized at last year's Volunteers' Awards Dinner for her outstanding design (below).

Interested in becoming a HomeSharing Provider or a Seeker?

HomeSharing was created in response to a great need for affordable housing in the community. Despite Somerset and Hunterdon County’s reputation for affluence, we are faced with a serious hidden homeless crisis.

Long-time residents on fixed incomes are unable to maintain their mortgages. Corporate downsizing has placed formerly secure homeowners in jeopardy of losing their homes. Many simply can’t afford the high rental costs. HomeSharing clients also include: the working poor, senior citizens, disabled, and residents in transition (for example, widowed or divorced men and women unexpectedly forced to live on one income).

"Providers" are people who need to share their homes or apartments in order to maintain them.  "Seekers" are individuals searching for affordable housing in the community.

You may want to be a HomeSharing Provider if you are:
   * a homeowner or apartment renter with an extra, bedroom
   * a retired or recently widowed person needing extra income
   * an elderly person in need of some assistance**
   * a person with a disability in needing some help with daily
         living**
   * parents with children in need of occasional childcare.

You may want to be a HomeSharing Seeker if you are:
   * a student  (over the age of 18), or
   * an adult in the midst of a career change
   * a single parent
   * a recently widowed or divorced person
   * a working or retired person unable to afford rent on your own
   * a person with a disability**

  **NOTE- clients must be independent enough to meet their own basic needs.

Eligibilty is not restricted on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or income.
